Montgomery County Police are investigating a fatal collision that happened this afternoon.
“At 4:05 p.m. Montgomery County Police, along with Fire and Rescue, received a call for a personal-injury collision on MD-198 at Old Columbia Pike,” said Lieutenant Dave McBain, MCP Traffic Division.
Police say both drivers were transported to local hospitals, where the driver from the green Saturn died from injuries.
“Because we don’t know where the vehicles were coming from, we shut down the entire roadway so we don’t lose any evidence,” said McBain.
MD-198 was closed, both east and west, from Old Columbia Pike to Old Columbia Road for the bulk of rush hour.
“Investigators are coming out, and they’re looking for roadway evidence, markings in the roadways, skid marks, debris, what the vehicles look like right now, fresh while they’re still in the road,” said McBain.
Police say in its initial evaluation, the 1996 Saturn SL was travelling eastbound, then crossed into the westbound lanes and collided with the 2006 Mercedes E50.
“It was a head-on collision,” said McBain. “Right now, for unknown reasons we don’t know why they collided. We don’t know what caused them to come into contact with each other and that’s exactly why we have the whole road shut down.”
The driver of the Mercedes is identified as 39-year old Salamatu Kuyateh from Silver Spring.
She is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.
Details on the victim driving the Saturn will be released once the family has been notified of his death.
