It was red, white and blue all over New Market Elementary School on Monday, as it held an annual celebration for those who served.
The annual New Market Elementary School Veteran’s Day celebration was a little different this year.
“The ceremony, in general, I’ve loved it for the last three years since I’ve been here. It’s always been very special, but this one is definitely going to go in the record books. I’m very excited about this one. I just drove forever, and I’m glad to be here,” said Zachary and Angela Dwyer.
First grade teacher Angela Dwyer’s husband Zachary, who is currently deployed in the Navy, drove hours all the way from Florida just to surprise her.
The school’s music teacher, Julie Seiler, has organized the event for the past 11 years. She said the school puts on the event as a special way of thanking those who served for their service, honoring their sacrifice, and showing appreciation.
The school also honored more than 20 local veterans, including World War II and Vietnam vet Ralph Crain.
“It brings tears to my eyes. It makes me very emotional,” said Crain.
Seiler said the school also has a letter writing campaign, where students write letters to veterans.
