Students across Montgomery County are having a real interesting summer experience; that’s literally what it’s called!
“Summer R.I.S.E., Real Interesting Summer Experience, is a three-week career experience and shadowing program for high school juniors and seniors,” said William Jawando, Director, Summer R.I.S.E.
The program is wrapping up this week, after more than 400 students shadowed local professionals for 60 hours.
“The whole goal is to expose them to careers that they might be interested in,” said Jawando. “We want to get them thinking about what they might want to do.”
From a local veterinarian to fire and rescue, police and even Summer R.I.S.E.’s parent company WorkSource Montgomery, the diverse list of host companies mirrors the diverse group of participating students.
“I love helping people, so doing this kind of pushed me to want to do that even more,” said Josepha Komeka, student, Northwest High School.
But students aren’t the only ones reaping the benefits. WorkSource Montgomery said Summer R.I.S.E. is meant to foster a symbiotic relationship.
“Our great hosts have the unique opportunity to really tap into our youth, understand how they perceive the world of work, and cultivate and tailor the services they provide to the community,” said Yazmeane Watson, Program Associate, Summer R.I.S.E.
Jawando said the program will continue to grow, and he encourages more local companies and students to participate next summer.
