After an increase in pedestrian accidents in Montgomery County, officials are stepping up to educate the public.
In 2015, there were more than 400 pedestrian accidents in Montgomery County, according to police. A quarter of those accidents happened in parking lots.
Thursday, volunteers passed out flyers to stores in shopping centers to remind drivers and pedestrians to stay alert. For one council member, this issue really hits home.
“When I’m in a parking lot, I don’t know if the driver realizes that I can’t get out of the way. I can’t jump out of the way of a car anymore because I can’t jump,” said Councilman Hans Riemer of the Montgomery County Council.
About 10 percent of pedestrians involved in parking lot accidents in Montgomery County suffered debilitating injuries.
