Williamsport teachers brought their curriculums outdoors on Monday as the school hosted its annual science, technology, English, and math (STEM) challenge.
Elementary and middle school students from Springfield Middle School joined in as kids completed hands-on, team based activities.
The schools are located on a STEM campus. Some of their students attended as part of the STEM magnet program, while others attended as part of the school district.
Chris Kopco, planetarium and STEM resource teacher, says the annual challenge is advantageous for students as they learn how to problem-solve.
“It lets them get problems, figure out a solution, realize that they’re going to fail sometimes and that’s OK because you learn from that and you can build on that,” said Kopco.
While last year’s challenge was C&O Canal-themed, this year’s challenge was Civil War themed. Kopco hopes for a space theme in 2019.
