Update: Lanes clear after cement truck overturns on I-81 in Halfway

Overturned cement truck on I-81 SB

The driver of a cement truck suffered non-life threatening injuries after the cement truck overturned on I-81 southbound before Halfway Blvd, exit 5 in Washington County on Tuesday morning. 

The driver, identified as Joseph Klemczak of Lehighton, Pennsylvania, was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

The call was reported shortly before 7 a.m., according to emergency dispatch.

Investigation reveals that the front tire of the truck blew out, causing the truck to veer into the right side guardrail. The truck and trailer overturned over the guardrail and came to rest on its side.

According to Maryland State Police, the driver was trapped, but able to exit the truck after rescue personnel assisted by removing part of the cab.

The right lane of I-81 was closed for approximately three hours.

 All lanes of I-81 are now open.

The driver was not at fault and was not charged for any violations.

The right lane remains closed. Traffic is getting by on the left lane on I-81 southbound. 

Troopers continue to investigate the crash.

Investigation reveals that Joseph Klemczak of Lehighton, PA was operating a 2015 Volvo Truck on southbound I-81 approaching Halfway Blvd. He was hauling dry cement powder in a bulk trailer. While traveling in lane 2, the front tire of the truck blew out, causing the truck to veer into the right side guardrail. The truck and trailer overturned over the guardrail and came to rest on its side. The driver was trapped but able to exit the truck after rescue personnel assisted by removing part of the cab. Lane 2 of I-81 was closed for approximately 3 hours. Lane 1 was temporarily closed for 15 minutes to allow a tow truck to pull the truck up the embankment. All lanes of I-81 are now open. The driver was not at fault and was not charged for any violations.
