UPDATE: Jonathan Street house’s demolition is on hold, thanks to community opposition

Maryland

An abandoned home on 335 Jonathan Street, once called “The Chicken Coop” is safe from demolition for now.
City officials say that while the demolition is on hold, a fence is surrounding the house for safety.

Reggie Turner, a community activist and historian, led the movement about a week ago by asking residents to call City Hall to protest tearing down the house, which he says holds a lot of history.
Now, he will present a new plan for the building to city council.

“A lot of the history within the Jonathan Street community is at risk of being lost, so this is a small victory to move things in the right direction. What I was looking for was a pause,” said Turner.

Turner will present before the Hagerstown City Council on May 7 and if, after the presentation, the council does not agree to preserve the home it will be demolished on May 9.
