Partnership helps veterans find therapy in horses

Maryland

The Antietam Detachment of the Marine Corps League in Washington County has partnered with Star Equestrian Center in support of their horses for heroes program.

Horses for Heroes is a program for active duty and veterans, utilizing horses as a means of coping with PTSD.

This partnership gives veterans the opportunity to participate in equestrian activities and build a relationship with the horses.

Star Equestrian Center staff and those at the Marine Corps League have noticed a change in the heroes once they begin working with the horses.

“The interaction with the horses helped the individuals open up, not just when they are on the horse, but when they are away from the arena or away from the horses and the therapy they have been able to reach inside and discuss and share that with them,” said Jeff Mangum of the Antietam Detachment of the Marine Corps League in Washington County.

The program is free for veterans and their families, funded completely on grants and donations.
