New law requires taxes for peer-to-peer car sharing programs

Maryland

A new law that went into effect Jan. 1 will now require peer-to-peer car sharing programs to pay taxes and other fees in the state of Maryland.

Online car platforms like Turo will now be ordered to pay taxes similar to other car rental places like Hertz and Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

For the owner of Abiyoto Car Rental, Habtom Abiyoto, he says it’s fair for companies like this to pay taxes.

“Pay your taxes, it’s not fair just to go online and you pay for the rent, you pay for the workers, you pay for every single thing here, ” said Abiyoto.

Senate bill 743 will also apply new insurance regulations for peer-to-peer car sharing programs.
