UPDATE: Police have released the name of the suspect, who is currently in custody.

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WDVM) — Officials responded to the area of downtown Gaithersburg on Thursday after 25-year-old Twon Dominique Kelly fled the scene after an attempted arrest.

Gaithersburg officials said the situation is unrelated to the shooting on Wednesday evening.

Police said that a victim reported a rape that occurred during the night from March 22 to March 23. The victim said that she had attended a party with Kelly in Gaithersburg where police say Kelly sexually assaulted the victim.

Police were attempting to arrest Kelly in the downtown Crown area with a warrant when he fled. A SWAT team geared up on-scene after that.

Police say that Kelly turned himself in around 5:23 p.m. They said that during the investigation after taking him into custody, they found a gun under a doormat in the apartment where they believe Kelly was. Detectives say they are still “working to determine if there is a connection between the gun and kelly.”

Police said that Kelly is currently being held without bond. HE was arrested for second-degree rape, attempted second-degree rape and second-degree assaults.

According to police, there was an attempt to arrest an individual with a warrant and they fled the scene. A SWAT team has arrived on the scene and is gearing up.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
