Hagerstown woman picks up trash around the county

Maryland

After seeing a post on Facebook from trash free Maryland, a Hagerstown woman decided to take matters into her own hands.

Ashley Johnson has been picking up trash every day and posting the results on social media.

The efforts are part of the April 30 days of picking up litter challenge.

Johnson has picked up a variety of items such as liquor bottles, plastic, styrofoam, cans, furniture, clothes and needles.

She takes home the trash and sorts through it so it can be recycled.

Johnson also pulls the tabs off the tops of cans to give them to the Ronald McDonald house.

“If you drive around anywhere in our county, there is trash everywhere. It’s just a little disheartening that people don’t care. I just thought if I would start doing it, that people would see the pictures and maybe take the initiative to do it on their own,” said Johnson.

Johnson says she wants to clean up Hagerstown for the kids and inspire others to do the same. She will continue these efforts even after the month of April.
