Hagerstown Rescue Mission set to expand

Maryland

There’s no question that the city of Hagerstown is growing. According to Executive Director of The Hope Center at the Hagerstown Rescue Mission, the shelter is a part of that growth.

“We can get as many as 67 people in here at a time, it varies day to day,” Bruce Shank, executive director, said.

The organizations plans to add on and expand its dining room and kitchen area to better serve its community during soup kitchen hours and other events.

“People have to wait or they have to stand up and that’s the whole idea expanding the dining area so we can seat more people so they can be comfortable and eat without having to stand up or stand around and often wait,” Bruce Shank said.

Director of Development, Becky Shank planned some events in the month of April urging people to donate or at least participate in the effort to improve awareness of the facility.

The shelter’s Rock the Run 5K begins 9 a.m. at Fairgrounds Park in Hagerstown. This year’s theme is pirates versus princesses.

“We’re hoping that we will receive some proceeds from this and that is going to go directly to a major expansion and add-on of our kitchen and dining room over here at the hope center,” Becky Shank said.

Construction is expected to begin later this year.
