Hagerstown man charged with child abuse

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - A Hagerstown man has been charged with first-degree child abuse, according to the Hagerstown Police Department.

Jason Phillip McLaughlin, 37, of Hagerstown was arrested on Friday, following an incident from July 8.

According to police, investigators responded to an apartment located at 25 1/2 West Franklin Street for a report of an unresponsive child. Upon arrival, officers found a 2-month old child who was having breathing problems. 

McLaughlin was identified as the child's father.

The child was taken by Maryland State Police helicopter to the Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore.

The child remains in critical condition at this time.

McLaughlin was later identified as the suspect in the investigation. He was arrested on Friday, and taken to the Washington County Detention Center.

He is currently being held without bond.
