Hagerstown Council approves funding to upgrade Wheaton Park basketball courts

Maryland
The Hagerstown Council approved to use more than $32,000 to improve the basketball courts at Wheaton Park.

The money would go towards the court’s new poles and backboards. However, the money will also go towards painting a mural on the court. Every summer the Ruthann Monroe Summer Basketball League uses Wheaton Park. Organizers of the league say the renovations of the court will benefit the local community.

“It’s something that I’ve been working on for you know over a year, and just see it all come in play, I’m super excited,” said Ebonie Williams, commissioner of the league.

“And I was a part of the summer league back then, so to be a part of the growth in the community is amazing, you know I want to add some more excitement and more positive energy to the youth with the artwork,” said Quielan Gantt, also known as “Graffdummy Art”, the artist who will paint the mural on the court.

The council is using money from the Community Development Block Grant to fund the project.
