Chas A. Gibney flower shop in Hagerstown has been in business for over 100 years. It’s been nonstop work for the women who work there leading up to Mother’s Day.
“The girls have stayed all week long to be able to get things done for the next day,” said Jessica Swope, who has worked at Gibney’s for 20 years.
“A lot of soft greens. Pastels, those are my favorites,” said Nancy Hazard, Floral Designer for 31 years.
Hazard has been a floral designer since she was 16. The colorful Spring Sonatas are just one of the dozens of arrangements she has left to work on. Since Friday, the family owned floral business has made up to 400 deliveries.
“We unfortunately had to take so many and then stop because we weren’t able to fill it all,” said Swope.
Over the years, the family said the flower business is not like it used to be. They said they have to compete with online shopping and grocery stores, but hope people continue to shop local for the quality.
“There orders come directly to us and get filled by us, so if they have a problem with anything everything is handled through us and not a third person,” said Swope.
“It’s nice to make people happy. I like to make people happy,” said Hazard.
Experts said keep your flowers in a cool spot and remember to water them every day.
