FCC advises how to file a complaint for cable service issues


For the second time within a week, Antietam Broadband customers experienced another phone and internet outage.

Customers have questioned where they can turn for help with problems with their cable service. The Federal Communications Commission website spells out specific steps that can be taken.

FCC said to first contact your cable company. If the problem cannot be resolved, the FCC says your next step should be to contact the local franchising authority which typically is the municipality in which you live.

Municipalities within Washington County who have a franchise agreement with Antietam Broadband are:

  • Williamsport – 301-223-7711
  • Smithsburg – 301-824-7234
  • Hagerstown – 301-766-4175
  • Funkstown – 301-791-0948

According to Antietam Broadband President Brian Lynch, the most recent outage started the evening of May 2 around 6 p.m. While he can’t confirm that it’s linked to malicious activity like the first outage, he does confirm that Antietam has spoken to authorities about the situation. Lynch chose not to confirm which agency is involved.

Lynch noted approximately 6,500 customers were impacted by the second outage.

Hagerstown residents have agreed to hold what is being called a, “More Cable Options for Hagerstown: Stop the Monopoly” meeting to discuss alternative cable company options. The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 15, at the Washington County Library.

Customers also have the option to file a complaint through the Federal Communications Commission and contact the Maryland Office of Attorney General via the consumer protection division hotline: (410)-528-8662.
