Call before you dig

Maryland

Warmer weather and the arrival of spring means its time to begin outdoor projects, which is why this April marks the 12th annual National Safe Digging Month.

The national call before you dig number, 811, puts homeowners and contractors in touch with Miss Utility System in Maryland.

Maryland law requires that you provide the utility system at least two business days notice before starting major digging projects. When you call them, Miss Utility will come out and mark where underground utility lines are.

Every nine minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone didn’t call 811.

Russell Bedell, manager of communications at Columbia Gas said, ” It can be extremely dangerous and can also cause property damage and things for the utility repair. We want people to avoid anything that can be unsafe or cost them money.”

The 811 call before you dig hotline operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the service is free to use.
