The 2019 sailing season kicked off at City Park in Hagerstown on Saturday with model yacht racing.
Each boat was assembled by hand. Participants used remotes to direct their yachts around multiple markers in the water that had flags attached at the top.
Yacht club members say they have been racing in City Park for four years. They explain what happens during the race and how the wind plays a major part.
“These boats are just powered by the wind, the first class which is the smaller boat is a boat that has two channels so all we’re doing with our thumbs and the transmitter is, we’re bring in the sails in and out, everything else is all about the wind,” Jarl Wathne said, the commodore of Cumberland Valley Model Yacht Club.
Wathne says for the first time ever his club will be hosting a 12-meter regatta in Hagerstown come October.
