Maryland Board of Public Works supports Western Maryland Scenic Railroad with a grant

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad has been chugging forward since its re-launch of the stop to Frostburg and with their push, the Maryland Board of Public Works has supported the railroad, awarding them a grant for the next fiscal year

The Maryland Board of Public Works is aboard the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, approving them for a 250 thousand dollar grant.

“We will be continuing to invest those moneys into maintenance on our feet of passenger cars as well as our locomotives,” John Garner, the Chief Executive Officer of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, said.

According to board documents, the award will be distributed in equal quarterly installments and will go towards operations and maintenance with the railroad looking forward to fixing up their historic trains.

“A lot of our cars are over 50 years old and some of our cars show that. Our jeep 30 which pretty much have been the diesel main state power at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad for the past 29 years are showing signs of age so they need a lot of attention, a lot of love and repairs,” Garner said.

For more than a year the stop to Frostburg was closed due to mudslides. The stop has been re-opened for a couple of month now and officials say it’s made a difference

“To see the engine on the turn table, that’s really an interval piece of what we do and something people want to see,” Laura Shelton, the executive director of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad said.

Since its return to Frostburg, officials say they have received an overwhelming amount of support and continue to look forward to the future.

“To be apart of this, o have assembled a superior team to help propel us forward and take the next step and take us to the next level of where we need to be is phenomenal. I am living the dream job,” Garner said.

With plans to also change repaint the trains to circus colors and hopes to one day expand family themed events, eventually run year round and even add a steam locomotive.

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad will have their Christmas in July event all weekend long.
