Man shot after attempting to assault deputy in Hampshire County

A man is dead after being shot in the head, while being transported to the Potomac Regional Jail.

The incident took place on Tuesday, when deputies from the Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office and Frederick County, Va. Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence along Mason Hill Road, near Yellow Springs Road, for a report of a stolen motorcycle from Frederick County, Va.

After obtaining a search warrant, an active meth lab and homemade explosives were found inside the home, belonging to John O’Handley.

O’Handley was arrested and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine.

According to the press release, the arresting deputy was traveling east on Route 50, near the Frye’s Flat Liberty Station west of Augusta, when O’Handley allegedly came between the seats and attempted to grab the deputy’s pistol. Another inmate was also in the vehicle.

The arresting deputy said O’Handley allegedly tried to take control of his duty pistol, and the deputy then fired one shot that struck O’Handley in the head.

O’Handley died due to the gun shot. The deputy and other inmate were not harmed.

West Virginia State Police is still investigating this incident.
