Inmate Tyrone Arrington has been preparing turkeys for the hungry with the non-profit organization Bea Gaddy Foundation for the past four years.
“This is something we do every year. It’s something I enjoy doing because I get to help out a lot of people. I figure if they can feed them, we can cut them,” Arrington said.
There are at least 400 hundred turkeys. That means there are at least 7,500 lbs of turkeys that the inmates will be preparing this holiday season.
All that turkey cutting also helps the inmates get ready for their life after prison. Its set-up so some inmates have jobs lined-up once they are released back into the community.
“I get a lot of practice with cutting. This is something I plan on doing once I’m released, so all the practice that I get is for the better,” Arrington said.
Managers overseeing the inmates said they appreciate the program and see a difference in the inmates who participate.
“They’ve learned skills, and they’ve become proud of what they know. Of course, they go through the apprenticeship program. With the program, they have documentation that follows with them that can help them get a job,” Tom Rice, Plant Manager for Maryland Correctional Enterprises Meat Plant, said.
Giving is receiving, and preparing turkeys for the holidays is just one step for inmates to give back to the communities before they rejoin.
