For elderly women like Tina Bickmore, the Brunswick Senior Center was just the launching point to see the world.
“I didn’t expect anything really cool like this this morning,” explained senior center visitor Bickmore.
Frederick County Public Libraries brought the virtual reality experience to the group with several Google Cardboard headsets.
“Brunswick is a smaller community so we really focus at our library to do outreach, but also to bring things to [local seniors] that maybe they can’t get to the library for,” explained Brunswick Library associate, Beth Cartier.
These ladies are getting the chance to see about ten different scenes from around the world, and the universe. All they have to do is put on their virtual reality headsets, and they’re transported.
“I was doing a lot of looking and searching around because i realized there were so many views that were possible,” Bickmore said.
Library staff controlled the scenes from a tablet, and could monitor where everyone was looking. For many, it was a first-time experience with the technology.
“It was like someone transported me, it was really neat,” said Bickmore.
