Student found with handgun in high school

A student in Montgomery County is in police custody tonight after a gun was found in his school bag.

A school resource officer at Spring Brook High School in Silver Spring investigated after he was tipped off about the weapon.

The officer found an unloaded .40 caliber handgun in the student’s backpack.

Though the student was arrested and taken into custody, his motivation for bringing the weapon remains unknown.

The student has been identified as Solomon Henderson, 17, and has been charged as an adult.

“The school administrators and the security staff worked very well with the SRO, the SRO worked with them,” said Montgomery County Police Captain Tom Jordan. “They coordinated their response and they were able to get that handgun out of the students bag without any problems. So that is good and it is a concerted effort. It is a team effort.”

Henderson was unable to appear in court on Tuesday due to their closure but is expected to have a bond hearing on Wednesday.
