Officials are piloting a program in Maryland that checks on older residents daily and its the first of its kind in the nation.

Seniors can sign up to receive a call around the same time every day. The program is sponsored by the Maryland Department of Aging. If the person does not answer, they’ll try again two more times and then call the person’s emergency contact. Anyone 65 or older can apply.

“It’s especially handy for older individuals, who may live alone, who may not have family or close friends around, but they want somebody to check in on them,” said Mary Anderson with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services.
