President Trump has signed an executive order that will stop federal grant money from going to safe zones for undocumented immigrants called sanctuary cities. One of those cities is in Montgomery County.
Takoma Park is considered a sanctuary city, which means that police or city employees will not cooperate with immigrations and customs enforcement. President Trump’s executive order also states that federal funds be withheld from cities and counties that don’t cooperate with immigration officials, but right now, it’s not clear what will happen in Takoma Park.
“We’re still examining it to see exactly what the repercussions will be. It’s not clear exactly what will happen if we will lose some federal money,” said Kate Stewart, mayor of Takoma Park.
