Police make arrest in hate crime incident

Montgomery County Police have made an arrest for a hate crime incident that happened in Kensington last month.

Sixty-nine year old Jerome Want, of Hagerstown, is being charged with telephone misuse and harassment because of the person’s race.

Police say, in January, officers responded to the Montgomery County Housing Opportunities Commission for a report of someone making threatening phone calls. An HOC employee said someone called multiple times over the course of five days making sexual remarks and using racial slurs. Police were able to get a search warrant for Want, and he was taken into custody.

“Through the investigation from officers they determined that it was just one person making these phone calls and through that they were able to get the warrant and charge him with telephone misuse,” said Toreno Herbert, Montgomery County Police Department public information officer.

Want has been released on bond until his next court date.
