MOUNT AIRY, Md. - National Night Out happened across the United States on Tuesday, but in one town in Frederick County, Maryland, their local police department held their first inaugural night out.
For the last 35 years, cities and towns have been celebrating National Night Out. But for the Town of Mount Airy, this year is different.
“This is our first one and we have come a long since last October. The years have really just flown by,” said Police Chief, Dougal Reitz.
The Mount Airy Police Department has been operating since last fall. The department patrols the town 20 out of 24 hours every day.
“We really have been coming into contact with different people in the community,” continued Chief Retiz. “The community has really embraced us here. It was really time to have their own police department."
Chief Retiz said that National Night Out is the perfect way to show the town how far they have come.
Officers were on scene as well as the town's only K-9.
“So far, it has been a really good success,” said Jennifer block, a volunteer. "We have a small town and we have a lot of people really invested in being interested in what is going in their local people department."
Residents enjoyed food, games, and even had the opportunity to interact with Chief Retiz as he participated in the dunk tank.
"I am probably most excited all of the playhouses,” said Xander Bloch, Troop 460 Mount Airy, Md.
And as many walked around the Mount Airy Carnival Grounds to learn all about different types of law enforcement, people said it is all about spending time with their local first responders.
Other departments that had National Night Out in Frederick County, Maryland include: the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, the Frederick Police Department, and the Thurmont Police Department.
