Police in Montgomery County are investigating the pedestrian crash that has left a mother in Rockville dead.

The victim has been identified as Dona Amarasekara, 74.

She was struck just after 5 p.m. Thursday night while crossing Old Georgetown Road at Kingswood Road.

Though the investigation will officially take several more weeks to finish, police said the victim was not wearing brightly colored clothing.

Emergency crews responded within minutes and transported her to a nearby hospital where she died from her wounds.

“Remember to cross at well lit areas,” said police collision reconstruction unit officer David Cohen. “Cross at marked cross walks or follow pedestrian signals and drivers need to watch out for people crossing the road whether they were crossing legally or illegally. This is a road way that is shared by everybody.”

The death of Dona Amarasekara represents the 14th pedestrian death in Montgomery County over the course of 2018.
