Montgomery County Public Schools allows more media availability

Montgomery County Public School’s (MCPS) superintendent touched on a wide range of important issues and developments during the first press conference of a new media format on Thursday.

Through a new series of press conferences Superintendent Jack Smith is inviting the public to take a look at what’s going on within MCPS.

School officials touched on topics including student mental health, new heating systems, school diversity and new facilities.

A top discussion point at the presser was the issue of pedestrian involved car collisions, especially near schools.

“Our goal is to get to every single elementary child this year with really explicit instructions around using cross walks and then hope that grows up with them and also permeates and becomes pervasive with families as well as working with the state,” said Smith.

Regarding pedestrian safety, Superintendent Smith also spoke about the fines for drivers who illegally pass school buses, saying he is advocating for driver fines to be increased from $250 for such an offense.
