Montgomery County has had its share of athletes succeed in the Olympics and the latest is a hockey player from Rockville.
Haley Skarupa got her start playing at the Rockville Ice Arena with the Washington Pride hockey team. She attended Wootton High School. The 24-year-old is part of the U.S. team that won against the Olympic athletes from Russia on Tuesday. Skarupa’s former coach says the whole community is rooting for her.
“When she was named the team, I was just so happy for her because I knew what she had gone through. Also, it’s great for the area. To have a local Olympian is so special and it couldn’t have happened to a greater kid,” said Kush Sidhu, head coach of the Washington Pride.
The U.S. women’s hockey team will play Canada Thursday.
