Mobile bookstore makes its way to local book festivals

An enterprising business woman in Montgomery County has found a new way to bring books into the lives of young children.

Debbie Cohen always wanted her own book business but found out through industry consultants that a store on the go is much more affordable than opening a traditional shop.

“I started thinking about the fact that I should get a cool vehicle to bring to the book fairs and sort of one thing led to another,” Cohen said.

What her search ultimately led to was a 30 year old trolley that Cohen purchased, fixed up and now proudly drives around Montgomery County visiting schools.

Cohen can load the trolley up with about 1,500 books for kids of all ages up to young adults.

“Whenever I go to a school they get super excited both about the books and also about the trolley and that is a whole lot of fun,” Cohen said.

And over the past 18 months, the traveling bookstore trolley has grown into a must-have feature for many local book fair events.

In her estimation, Cohen has taken her book trolley to nearly 50 Montgomery County school and book festivals in just the past year.
