Montgomery County Public School officials decided to expand a program that offers free condoms to high school students to include all 26 high schools in the area.
An increase in sexually transmitted infections in young people led school and health officials to offer free condoms at four high schools in the county. The program began the 2018 school year.
The school board voted to have condoms available at all Montgomery County high schools. Doctor Travis Gayles said there is more to it than just giving out condoms.
“It creates the opportunity for young folk to ask questions about symptoms, so that they know if they potentially have an infection,” said Gayles, county health officer.
Health officials say as the program expands, there may be a need for funding.
