Man and dog die in house fire

A man and his dog are dead after a house fire in Silver Spring.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue crews responded to the 2300 block of Dexter Avenue in the Forest Glen area around 6:30 Thursday morning. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the home.

The homeowner, identified as 43-year-old Warren Baugh, III, was found on the first level and taken to a local hospital. He later was pronounced dead. Authorities’ say the fire started near the couch, and that the smoke alarms were on and working. The fire continues to be under investigation.

“Neighbors had met fire crews outside, stating that there was possibly someone inside. That was their first job, to make entry and start searching for that victim. Again, they found him immediately and brought him out and started resuscitative efforts,” said Capt. Jason Blake, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue service.

Officials say this is the first civilian death in a structure fire in Montgomery County this year. One firefighter was also taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
