Kick-off event held for Maryland Iron Festival


To commemorate Northern Frederick County as a center for the craft of iron making,
an event was held to kick off the Maryland Iron Festival.

The festival will be celebrated in the Historic Village, Catoctin Mountain Park, and Cunningham Falls State ParkThe festival will feature blacksmithing, casting and molding demonstrations, live music and performances, and a tour of historic buildings.

Officials with the state park said the festival is a great way to show the iron making history in Northern Frederick County that began in 1774.

“[The festival] it talks about how iron was made, the celebration of that history in the area and also focusing on the workers that lived and worked here from slave workers all the way up to immigrant workers and to modern times,” said Mark Spurrier, park manager at Cunningham Falls State Park.
