The National Study Center of the University of Maryland released statistics that show Frederick County, Md., ranked in the top five for the highest conviction rate of DUI cases.

In a recent study showed Frederick County ranked 4th out of 23 counties for the highest conviction rate of DUI cases in 2017.

“We realized that it’s something most people are impacted by; not everybody is subject to a burglary or a robbery,” said Charlie Smith, State’s Attorney for Frederick County. “But, everyone drives the roads. Everybody knows someone who has lost a love one to drunk driving.”

The study found that 88.57 percent of cases that were prosecuted ended with a conviction.

In 2017, 905 people were arrested for impaired driving in the county. 705 had positive outcomes including 174 guilty “findings.”

Smith said prosecutors remain committed to pursuing these types of cases.

The latest conviction rate was the highest the State’s Attorney for Frederick County has seen past four years.
