Members of the Frederick County, Maryland community are mourning the loss of a woman who spent decades of her life serving in public education.
Jean Smith served on the county board of education for 20 years as both an appointed and elected member.
But for more than 30 years, she was an active member of the PTA.
Officials say she led the board in a leadership position as president before stepping down in 2014 due to health concerns.
Current board president, Brad Young, worked alongside Smith on the board and says he’ll remember her dedication to education.
“I enjoyed working with her and seeing her passion for public education and the students of Frederick County. She didn’t do anything without her heart saying ‘This is what’s best for kids in Frederick County,’ Young said.
Young says during her tenure, Smith championed for better teacher’s pay and smaller class sizes.
Smith passed away on Thursday at the age of 78.
