Fire department given rare honor

Department had previously won distinguished award back in 2007

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. - Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service was given one of the industry's top awards this week during the International Association of Fire Chiefs' Conference in Dallas.

The department was accredited by the commission on fire accreditation international for achieving the highest of standards within the service, thereby recognizing the department as one of the world's best.

The accreditation honor is so rare, only about 250 departments across the world have earned it.

The accreditation model is based of more than 200 different performance indicators.

"It is pretty significant,” said Montgomery County Fire Department spokesman Dan Ogren. “A lot of work went into making sure that we meet those standards. They look at a lot of things. They look at how our department is laid out. They look at response times. They look at how effectively we respond and how effectively we train."

Montgomery county fire and rescue was able to gain this rare honor once before as they were previously accredited back in 2007.
