Early morning fire destroys Gaithersburg barber shop

An early morning fire destroyed a Gaithersburg barber shop and caused a lot of damage to neighboring businesses.

Just after 5 a.m. Tuesday, more than 75 Montgomery County firefighters tackled blazes at Platinum Barber located in a shopping center along North Frederick Avenue.

Officials estimated that the shop suffered $300,000 in damages.

While the fire was solely contained to the barber shop, smoke caused damage to neighboring businesses.

Building and health inspectors were on the scene. A next-door market and a nearby sub shop have been closed.

An adjacent veterinary hospital sheltered about a dozen animals at the time of the fire, but all were deemed okay.

“Fire investigators did determine that the cause of the fire was electrical in nature. They believe it likely involved a power strip in the barbershop that overheated and burned undetected for a while before a passerby saw the smoke,” explained spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

Officials estimate a total of $500,000 in damages to the shopping center businesses.
