A Germantown doctor was sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted on 26 counts in billing schemes.
Dr. Atif Malik, 48, was involved in two schemes which involved $1.3 million in kickbacks and fraudulent billing. Patients were required to submit urine samples and Malik referred them to a specific lab in return for a payment of kickbacks, according to Maryland U.S. Attorney Robert Hur.
“The FBI, the Department of Health and Human Services, the IRS obviously on the tax piece. So a lot of different agencies. A lot of good, hard work was done by a whole number of our investigative partners,” said Hur.
Malik also pleaded guilty to underreporting his income by more than $3 million.
