A new director has been appointed for the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services.
Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Fox took over the position after Chip Jewell retired in December of last year. Fox will assist and coordinate with the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Companies throughout the county. Fox said he wants to continue to work on keeping volunteers as it is declining not just in the county, but around the region.
“We have a length of service awards program that we try to retain volunteers,” said Fox. “We are looking at stipends, awards ceremonies, banquets, things like that to try to acknowledge the works of volunteers.”
Fox volunteered as an EMT and firefighter for more than 30 yeas. He was word for Frederick County since 1990 as a Emergency Communications Dispatcher. The last four years, Fox has been the spokesperson for the department.
Currently, there are 2,200 fire and rescue volunteers in the county.
