College recognized for diversity

The Chronicle of Higher Education has officially recognized Montgomery College as the most diverse community college in the continental United States.

That strength through diversity was put on display Wednesday as nearly 200 students took to the field at the Germantown campus for the schools tenth annual soccer tournament for peace.

The students represented more than 60 countries as they played over the course of the day.

Several international students said that soccer has its own mode of communication, allowing players to enjoy the game despite language and cultural barriers.

“It is very enriching,” said Haitian player Jean-Philippe Beard. “It is just awesome to just have a game that really can unite people especially when people can be very divisive, especially across cultures. So just being a part of a game that can really help bring people together always feels good.”

The idea for the game was inspired back in 2008 by the ‘One Day One Goal World Peace Initiative.
