It all started with a cruise-in and a flea market and now, it has turned into a tradition for the Damascus area.
“It is the 200th anniversary year of Damascus, but it is our 21st year for Celebrate Damascus and we just had our 15th celebrate Damascus parade,” Tammy Newman, chairmen of Celebrate Damascus said.
It first started when the then owners of Damascus Motorcade known as Damascus Chevrolet, wanted to get the town more involved almost 21 years ago and now, it has turned into a part of their history.
“Celebrate Damascus is about not particularly one person or anything, it is about community,” Newman said.
The event is spread all over the area with a trolley that brings locals around with events like a family carnival, arts, food, and crafts.
“The importance of the event really is the fact that this community works together,” Linda Panagoulis, Montgomery County Recreation and Damascus Community Center
The event paints a even bigger picture for the community.
“We are a town that has pulled together and has united in many tragedies in many absolutely wonderful events, and we partnered and we help each other on whatever projects we can,” Panagoulis said.
It is the 21st celebration in Damascus and it brings over 20,000 locals.
