Montgomery County officials are reminding residents to be environmentally friendly this holiday season, as the average amount of waste increases by 25 percent between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
A new initiative called “Gift Outside the Box” encourages residents to make more sustainable choices, like buying gifts made from recycled materials and minimizing wrapping.
The public awareness campaign kicked off Monday.
It has five themes:
- Give to reduce, reuse and recycle
- Gift greener
- Give back
- Gift experiences
- Buy local
“[We need to] find ways in which to give items that are greener [and] find ways to which to reuse and recycle as best as possible,” said Montgomery County Council Executive Ike Leggett. “If we can do that, it can be a benefit to the entire community.”
