Heightened Security at Frederick High School Basketball Games

FREDERICK, Md. — Other than several police and sheriff’s deputies’ patrol cars, the scene outside Fredrick High School following Friday night’s boy’s junior varsity basketball game was normal. It was far different from what happened Wednesday evening after a shooting took place outside of the gymnasium injuring two teenage boys.

No suspects have been identified in the shooting, but schools opened as usual on Friday.

Students proudly wore their black and gold throughout the day and at the basketball games to show their solidarity with the school and to signify the community coming together after the terrifying incident.

“Everyone in the crowd, we’re all wearing our black and gold, we’re very proud,” said Gary Leishman, an assistant track coach for Frederick High School.

“Our community is really rallying around Frederick high school, it’s great to see. There’s been an outpouring of support from the community. We have students selling t-shirts that say FHSstrong and that’s really been the motto. It’s a great day to be a cadet,” said Michael Doerrer, spokesperson for Frederick County Public Schools.

“We’re selling FSHstrong shirts to kind of bring our school together after what happened, and show everyone we’re turning this into a positive,” said Abi Kumah, a senior student at Frederick High School.

Police are still investigating what happened outside of the gymnasium Wednesday evening. No arrests have been made, and additional police and security were at the school throughout the day.

“We have private security contractors onsite, as well as sheriff’s deputies here, said Doerrer.

Frederick High School and West Frederick Middle Schools were closed on Thursday but re-opened Friday, and the school and its students are working to get things back to normal.

“Everyone wanted to come and show people that we’re not going to be defined by what happened and we’re just going to move forward,” said Kumah.

According to officials, one of the two teenage boys injured in the shooting was released from the hospital on Friday. The other victim remains hospitalized.
