Gaithersburg PTA helps low-income families get to afterschool activities

News

A Gaithersburg Parent-Teacher Association is giving some low-income families a “lyft” this season thanks to a new partnership with a popular ride-sharing service.

On any Lyft ride across the country, use promo code JLESPTA, which stands for Jones Lane Elementary School, and between four to $10 will be donated to the school’s new initiative at no cost to the rider or driver.

That money goes towards Lyft gift cards to help families get to afterschool events like parent-teacher conferences, meetings and volunteer opportunities.

For some families without vehicles, round trips to the school via public transportation could take several hours.

The PTA noticed it was especially affecting the area’s Hispanic community.

“We’ve had very positive feedback so far from several mothers who have used it, and they’re so excited to be able to get here and to feel more connected,” said Stacy Kravitz, Vice President, Jones Elementary School PTA.

“This isn’t to get them to parties or anything like that. This is a real serious need,” said Hazel Keating, President, Jones Elementary School PTA.

“My community is really far away from the school. [I’ve talked with] most of them, and they do have the desire to get more involved in the school, but it’s really difficult for them,” said Adalia Ramos, volunteer, Jones Elementary School PTA.
