Out of the 10 high schools throughout Frederick County, only two of them have swimming pools, according to officials.
“With the new Frederick High School opening, the pool there is closing. The decision was made before I became the County Executive to not include a pool with that project. That takes 10 high school programs, their swim teams and their diving teams down to sharing two pools,” said Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner.
Officials said that it has become tough for all the schools to share a space where they can have swim team practice and meets.
To help fill that need, Frederick County and YMCA officials announced a partnership at a new YMCA that is set to be built in Urbana. Officials said it will be located near Urbana High School.
“When the opportunity came forward with the YMCA building, a new facility in the southern part of Frederick County, which is a whole YMCA, (it’s more than a aquatic center) we saw an opportunity to buy in and see if we could get some pool time for the high school swim teams, the competitive swim league and the general public,” said Gardner.
County officials said this partnership will allow more swim time for students.
“We’ll get more time for our high school swim team, swim leagues, more time for the general public and for our park and [recreation] group to offer swim classes for young students,” Gardner added.
“There’s obviously a lack of facilities in the Urbana area. The YMCA has been focused on trying to bring the whole facility to that area for the past several years,” said Frederick County YMCA President & CEO Chris Colville.
Officials said the new YMCA in Urbana is set to be open by early Spring of 2020.
