One member of Frederick County Fire & Rescue Services will be saying good bye after announcing his retirement Monday.

After nearly 20 years of assisting the Frederick community, Deputy Chief Chip Jewell will say good bye as Director of the Frederick County Division of Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services.

“To be able to be a small part of the growth of the emergency services in Frederick County has truly been an honor,” said Chief Jewell.

Chief Jewell started his career as a dispatcher in 1972 then left to work with Montgomery County, only to return in 2003 as the first Director of the Frederick County Division of Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services.

“Chief Jewell is an institution here in Frederick County,” said Frederick County Fire & Rescue Services, Fire Chief Tom Owens. “Chip has done work in order to improve a safety of our service to our personnel, and he has done that in many ways.”

Recruiting and retaining volunteers in the county is just one of many accomplishments Jewell said he is most proud of.

“The [Frederick County Division of Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services] has changed drastically in almost 50 years,” said Chief Jewell. “I have been honored to be a part of making that change as painless as possible but assure that our volunteer fire and rescues services remain strong.”

Chief Jewell created a very comprehensive medical physical program for volunteers in various fire companies.

While Chief Jewell might be saying good bye as director, he will be continuing his volunteer service at both Libertytown Volunteer Fire Department and Junior Fire Company #2

While many have mixed emotions on Chief Jewell’s retirement, his peers agree that his career was nothing less than tremendous.

“I truly enjoy the job, enjoyed the people and [am] proud to be a part of this service,” said Chief Jewell.

Officials report Battalion Chief Kevin Fox will act as Deputy Fire Chief for the Frederick County Division of Fire & Rescue Services until a selection is made to succeed Chief Jewell.
