Food for fines: Montgomery County Public Libraries reduce library fees

News

Have an old library fine you haven’t paid yet? How about getting rid of your library fine without using cash?

Starting Oct. 16, residents in Montgomery county can donate canned food items for one dollar per item off their over due book fees. All donations go to the local Manna Food Center that collects and distributes food within Montgomery County. Several bins are anticipated to be filled, said Steve Warrick, Poolesville Public Library.

“There will probably be multiple bins already filled so yeah just for example last year there was nearly 6,000 pounds of food was donated so we expect there to be something very similar to that,” Warrick said.

The program is offered during Montgomery County’s Community Service week. You can make a donation to libraries within Montgomery County with or without having a library fine through Oct. 30.
