Fire near Maryland Metals in Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN Md. (WDVM) — Around 8:40, the Hagerstown Fire Department and surrounding units responded to a large outside fire in Hagerstown Friday night.

The incident took place around the area of Burhans and Mitchell Avenue, right behind Maryland Metals.

When crews arrived to the scene, the fire was of large volume, but hours later were able to knock down the fire.

Officials say stacks of 100 by 300 feet of railroad ties were fully involved, but how those stacks caught on fire is still under investigation.

Battalion Chief, Mark Cleck was on scene and provided information about the fire.

“When you have railroad ties like this, they are soaked with oils and so the fire seeps in and it takes a long time to put it out,” said Cleck.

No injuries were reported. The fire department reminds residents that it is dry out right now, so to be careful when burning outside. Burning is not allowed in the city.
