Drivers in Montgomery County will now have choices when it comes to paying for parking on a mobile device.
The Department of Transportation recently announced the addition of Parkmobile to county on-street, lot and garage meters.
The app, which is available in most of the Washington, D.C. area, will be phased in over the next six months.
Montgomery County is one of the first jurisdictions in the country to offer multiple mobile payment options.
MobileNOW! has been in the county since 2009.
“We leave it up to the industry to come up with better features. That way, the users get the best of both worlds, and it’s true competition,” said Jose Thommana, Chief, MCDOT’s Parking Division.
“We don’t know for sure how it’s going to affect us,” said John Oglesby, CEO, MobileNow!. “I can tell you the goal for the county, which is very admirable, was to increase the overall usage of mobile payment.”
Both companies offer a pre-funded payment and a “pay as you go” option.
